Mammoth Kauri
30,000 to 50,000 years old
The story of Kauri…
The Kauri Forest originated in the northern island of New Zealand. It has been scientifically proven that they were around before the Ice Age. According to one theory, they were knocked down by a giant Tsunami and buried in peat bogs where they were perfectly preserved from the elements that would otherwise have rotted them away. Today, through careful extraction, these specimens are pulled out of the peat bog using heavy equipment with minimal impact on the environment. Then they are sawn up and used in a variety of decorative applications. This piece is carbon date to be 30,000 to 50,000 years old.

Slave Ship - Amistad II
Keel - Purpleheart wood
The story of the original Amistad…
On July 2, 1839, the Amistad (which means “friendship” in Spanish) was sailing off the shore of Cuba when a group of Black Africans who were being sold into slavery rose up against their captors on board the ship. Two months later the Amistad reached the waters off Long Island, New York. There the ship was seized by the U.S. Navy, which towed it to Connecticut. The rebels were jailed and charged with murder and piracy. However, political pressures caused a delay in the case of the Amistad. Since Cuba was then a colony belonging to Spain, the United States government felt it should turn the Africans over to the Spanish government. Eventually the case was heard before the U.S. Supreme Court. Former president John Quincy Adams represented the captives. In March 1841 the Supreme Court agreed with the earlier decision: the rebels were not guilty. In an 8-1 decision the judges proclaimed the men were “entitled to freedom,” even “by the laws of Spain itself.” In November the 35 survivors of the Amistad set sail for Africa. They arrived in Sierra Leone in January 1842.
The name of the ship became a symbol of the fight against slavery.
Our family got these pieces of the Amistad II keel while the ship was being build at the Mystic Seaport in the late 1990's. There was a barrel full of chips and the construction crew let us take the treasures!!
